Requirements

To be admitted to our program, teachers must meet some basic requirements. Your application will be pre-screened for these minimum qualifications.

Bachelor's Degree. Teachers must have at least a bachelor's degree in their subject area, or a bachelor's degree in Education with a specialization in their subject area. If you are not sure whether you qualify, we suggest that you apply, anyway - our staff will review your credentials for preliminary approval.

English Proficiency. Teachers must have excellent English language fluency, including both spoken and written English. You may be contacted by TC staff for a brief pre-screening interview to test your English ability.

Experience. You should have at least some experience teaching in your bachelor's degree area. Schools prefer teachers with at least 3 years of successful teaching experience; however, if you have less, you should still apply. Schools may still accept teachers with less experience if they can demonstrate that they will excel in the field!

Certification. You must have a teaching certificate from your home country. US schools will require teachers to obtain a professional state teaching certificate within at least the first-year of arriving in the US . In many cases, international teacher cannot be fully certified prior to arriving due to requirements that can only be completed in the US . However, your coursework, experience, and international teaching certificate will be evaluated and should match US teaching certificate requirements as closely as possible.

Certification

Certification is required in most public schools in the US . There are various alternative certification and non-traditional certification programs available to allow you to begin your teaching career in the US with a provisional teaching certificate.

Coursework in your subject area and an evaluation of your foreign transcripts by an independent agency are usually required. In addition, there may be a testing requirement, such as the Praxis Exams. You will need to research the individual requirements of your state and meet those requirements as soon as possible when you are hired for a teaching position.
